Exploring Gainesville: neighborhoods, parks, and landmarks

Gainesville offers an unusually varied mix of communities for a city its size. Haile Plantation is an established southwest Gainesville community organized around a recognizable village center. Nearby, the Town of Tioga is a mixed-use community west of Gainesville built around a walkable town center, and Oakmont is a master-planned residential community with preserved natural areas.

Closer to downtown, the Pleasant Street area is one of Gainesville’s historic neighborhoods, represented by its authentic streetscape. Near the University of Florida, the Duckpond neighborhood pairs historic homes with mature tree canopy.

Kanapaha Botanical Gardens is a 68-acre collection of distinctive gardens in southwest Gainesville. Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park is a National Natural Landmark centered on a 120-foot-deep limestone sinkhole. Paynes Prairie Preserve is an expansive, defining natural landscape just south of Gainesville, and Sweetwater Wetlands Park offers 125 acres of trails and boardwalks where filtered water flows toward the prairie — rich with birds and wildlife.

Downtown Gainesville is the walkable heart of the city, from the historic courthouse square to brick-lined streets of shops and restaurants. The Hippodrome State Theatre, housed in a former federal building in the downtown core, is Gainesville’s professional theatre. The Thomas Center, a Mediterranean Revival landmark, serves as a cultural center, and the Gainesville Community Playhouse — founded in 1927 — stages productions at the Vam York Theater.
