The Gainesville Anti-Boredom Report: Reasons to Leave the House (Oct 23-25)
Between the punk rockers taking over downtown and the bats taking over Lubee, Gainesville is fully booked this weekend. Here are six things actually worth leaving the house for — all in Alachua County, all verified this week.
Music & Nightlife
- THE FEST 24 — Fri Oct 23 through Sun Oct 25, multi-venue downtown Gainesville. Gainesville's signature DIY punk festival: 55+ bands (Bouncing Souls, PUP, Lagwagon) across dozens of walkable downtown venues — Bo Diddley Plaza, Heartwood Soundstage, Vivid Music Hall, The Wooly — all on one wristband. Tickets $220-$330/person + fees; confirm the current tier before buying.
Food & Drink
- Gainesville Fall Foodie Fest — Sat Oct 24 & Sun Oct 25, 2:00-8:00pm, The Oaks Mall, 6419 Newberry Rd. Two full days of food trucks (tacos to burgers to desserts), live music, and local artisans. Free admission and family-friendly.
- Haile Village Center Oktoberfest — Fri Oct 23, 5:00-10:00pm, 5100 SW 91st Terrace. Brats, beer, vendors, and an evening wandering the Village Center shops. Free, and built for the whole family.
No formal wine tasting on the calendar this weekend — but between the Foodie Fest and Oktoberfest, nobody's going thirsty.
Family-Friendly
- Florida Bat Festival — Sat Oct 24, 10:00am-5:00pm, Lubee Bat Conservancy, Gainesville. One of the largest bat-conservation festivals in the U.S., kicking off Bat Week: see some of the world's largest bats up close, plus wildlife education exhibits, kids' activities, food trucks, and local vendors — with a 21+ Bats & Brews Beer Garden for the grown-ups. Rain or shine; proceeds support conservation. Admission $10 ages 13+, $5 ages 5-12, under 4 free; Beer Garden $45 (samples + souvenir glass).
55+ Picks
- "We Sing of One World" — Voices Rising Community Chorus — Sat Oct 24, 4:00pm, First United Methodist Church, 419 NE First St. A world-music fall concert celebrating music's power to unite cultures — afternoon matinee, donation-based, with a portion benefiting the Greater Gainesville International Center. (Also performed Fri 7:30pm.) Suggested donation $10-$20.
Learn Something
- Robin Wall Kimmerer discusses "The Serviceberry" — Sun Oct 25, 7:00pm, Curtis M. Phillips Center, 3201 Hull Rd. The keynote of Gainesville Reads 2026: the bestselling Braiding Sweetgrass author — MacArthur Fellow and National Humanities Medal recipient — in conversation on generosity, reciprocity, and economies of care. $15 general admission (alternative ticketing available for those who find the price prohibitive).
